Osteoporosis (meaning ‘porous bones’) is a condition that causes bones to become thin, weak and fragile.  As a result, even a minor bump or accident can cause a fracture (broken bone). Approximately 4.74 million Australians over 50 years of age have osteoporosis (22%) or poor bone health  (osteopenia, 87%).  There is 1 fracture every 2.9 minutes in Australia related to Osteoporosis, in addition after an initial fracture the risk for subsequent fracture more than doubles in the next 6 to12 months, and persists for up to 10 years.

Osteoporosis is a silent disease as it has no overt symptoms, it is often not diagnosed until a fracture occurs. The good news is that with the right treatment and exercise the loss of bone density can be stoppped and even reversed. We have a proven program which utilises the latest research to maximise the bone building capacity of your efforts. We have Exercise Physiologists who are ready to guide you through the process of building stronger bones.

Osteogenic Exercise Physiology

At Living Energy Pilates and Rehabilitation you will be assessed by an Exercise Physiologist who is an expert in chronic disease management and Osteogenic (bone building) Exercise treatment. Based on your assessment and taking into account your current bone quality we will determine an exercise routine that will maximise the  Osteogenic benefits of your exercise program.

The specific goals of exercising for bone health change throughout life from building maximum bone strength in childhood and adolescence, to optimising and maintaining muscle and bone strength in young and mid-adulthood, and reducing bone loss in older age. For the elderly the focus of exercise is to increase or maintain muscle mass and strength, and address risk factors for falls, particularly any difficultly in balance and walking ability. Your Exercise Physiologist will design your Osteogenic Exercise Program to suit your individual needs.

The Osteogenic Exercise program may include the following activities : weight bearing exercise, progressive resistance training, balance and falls prevention exercises, Pilates (core and stabilisation) exercises and impact loading exercises.
